Then, once again, I got a note from a professor working on a book about David Foster Wallace reminding me that he was virtually certain that my chat with Wallace was the last interview he gave before he died. So that was the mood I started off in as a reader. I am not, in general, a fan of reader's guides. The professor also sent me a book he had written that was a reader's guide to “Infinite Jest.” A number of readers had suggested that IJ demanded a guide through its wilderness of pages and subplots. I get that Infinite Jest is a book intended for “serious readers,” people who long to go beyond the appearance of things and get to the heart of the matter, the big questions—who are we? So he captured Bowie vocals and guitar noises that perhaps would've been lost on an earlier record (for instance, the vocal of “Little Wonder” was just a guide vocal for a rhythm track). It certainly doesn't stack up to David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged or Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, but this fall's voter's guide in San Francisco will certainly help prop open just about any door. That is not the way I'm always able to read. I gave myself over to Infinite Jest and put myself in David Foster Wallace's hands.
